Royal Festival Hall, London, 11th March: Last week saw a host of British Asian, Urban and International talent come together to celebrate what has been a phenomenal year for the British Asian music industry.

The night belonged to Brit Asian star Jay Sean, who cleaned up all four of his nominations to pick up the Best Male, Best Album, Best Video and Best Urban act awards. The night capped a prolific year for Houslow-born Sean, who shot to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 last year, becoming the highest selling British artist in America since Elton John.

Hosted by BBC Asian Network’s Bobby Friction and Bollywood actress Sophie Choudry, the Lebara Mobile UK Asian Music Awards (UK AMAs) saw spectacular performances from a variety of talent from across the globe including Dutch ‘desi’ Imran Khan, Universal’s latest dance diva Jaya, rising Urban star Mumzy Stranger, Bollywood superstars RDB, Bhangra heartthrob Jaz Dhami and the legendary Talvin Singh.

An exciting mix of celebrities graced the Lebara Mobile ‘Blue Carpet’ including world champion boxer Amir Khan, number one rappers Chipmunk & DJ Ironik, Eastenders star Preeya Kalidas, award winning director Gurinder Chadha (‘Bend It Like Beckham’, ‘It’s A Wonderful Afterlife’), actors Jimi Mistry (‘The Guru’, ‘2012’) & Hari Dhillon (‘Holby City’), Manish Bhasin (‘Match of the Day’), American Idol finalist Anoop Desai and the Sugababes, who also set the stage alight with a very special performance.

Lebara Group CEO. Ratheesh Yoganathan said: “Lebara are delighted to be sponsoring and supporting the UK Asian Music Awards. This event was a true celebration of how far the Asian community has come in the UK. Lebara strives to be a pillar for the communities it serves, and supports this event in the knowledge that together, we are providing a platform for future artists to showcase their skills and talent. The ethos of the Awards has great synergy with what Lebara stands for, and its roots within the Asian community both in the UK and across the globe”.

UK AMA CEO & Co- Founder, Abs Shaid said: “Year on year we are making sure we provide a cutting edge event to acknowledge the contribution of Asian artists in the UK. This year has seen us return to the prestigious Royal Festival Hall and welcome a new title sponsor in Lebara Mobile. This year Asian artists will continue to make ground breaking moves in this country and abroad and the UK AMA will keep supporting and recognising their achievements”.

Backstage there was a lot going on, with everyone getting to the venue at 8am sharp. There was a lot going on as people were arriving at different times. I don’t think people actually realise the amount of time and effort that is put into putting together an awards cermony of this scale and all hats go off to everyone involved.

On my travels backstage I caught up with the many celebs such as RDB, Roch Killa and Surinder Ratten who were very pleasant and patient while they were getting there names signed and being issued with their passes. This is a rare thing to see has most celebs feel they dont have to cue up and and wait and can walk straighrt in. Despite everyone being under a lot of pressure there was a good vibe in dressing rooms and corridors. One person that made my night was Heather played by Cheryl Fergison in Eastenders, it was interesting to see a few of the Eastenders caste there on the night saw the likes of ex eastenders Jimmy Mistry and Preeya Kalidas who plays Amera.
