Sony Ericsson B-Boy Championship 2010

The Sony Ericsson B-Boy World Championships took place on 10th October 2010 at the O2 Brixton Academy.
A sell-out crowd of 8,000 saw B-Boys and B-Girls battle it out in the various categories for a chance to be crowned 2010 world champion.

The contested categories were:
– World Solo B-Boy Battle
– World Solo Popping Battle
– World Locking Pairs Battle
– World B-Boy Crew Battle

The competition, which is the most prestigious and high calibre break-dance event of the year, saw the world’s best poppers, lockers, B-Girls and B-Boys come together after five-months of international knock-out competitions.

This left only the best of the best crews and individuals to battle it out at the O2 Brixton Academy. This included contestants hailing from the USA, Russia, Brazil, Japan, France, Holland and the UK all vying for a chance to be crowned champion at the 15th anniversary of the ultimate B-Boy competition.

Representing the UK in the Crew battle was UK’s reigning national champions, Soul Mavericks, an eight-strong team hailing from London.

They disposed of the Mighty Zulu Kingz in the quarter finals but came up short against championship favourites and eventual winners Vagabonds Crew from France.

There were definitely some surprise decisions on the night and ones the crowd didn’t agree with.
Firstly in the B-Boy quarter finals, Japan’s Found Nation appeared to have done more than enough to go through. The judges thought otherwise and put through Russia’s Top 9 to a chorus of boo’s from the crowd.

The biggest upset of the night though had to be in Solo Popping Contest where Nelson from France upset the views of many and was awarded a win by the judges over the much favoured Salah also from France.
The crowd’s opinion was almost unanimously in favour of Salah as was mine. Again the judges thought otherwise and received there biggest boos of the night.

The night was spectacular with all participants really bringing their A-game. The only downer was an injury to a member of the Amazon B-Boy Crew representing Brazil. The member in question is now fine after being looked after by the onsite medical team.

Power move super star B-Boy Cico set a Guinness World Records for the most consecutive aerials performed in a break-dancing style at the Sony Ericsson B-Boy Championships World Finals. With representatives from the Guiness World of Records in attendance to verify and record the spectacular feat, Cico was handed a certificate and will be officially entered into the Guiness World Records.

All in all The Sony Ericsson B-Boy World Championships is an amazing night out with high octane energy from both participants and the hosts. With give aways and lots of humour the hosts really got the crowd going. and I for one look forward to next years 16th B-Boy Championships.
